How did old diving bells carry air underwater?
By lowering an open-bottomed chamber that trapped a pocket of air inside. Turn a cup upside down and push it into water: air remains trapped. A diving bell uses the same idea on a larger scale. Divers could enter the air pocket, descend below the surface and breathe for a limited time before fresh air was needed.
