History & Time
Why did sailors need extremely accurate clocks to find longitude?
Because comparing local noon with a reference time reveals how far east or west a ship has travelled. Earth turns 360 degrees in 24 hours. If a sailor knows the exact time at a reference location and measures local solar time, the time difference can be converted into longitude. A clock that drifted badly would create a dangerous position error.
