How did sailors use a sextant to find their position?
By measuring the angle between a celestial object and the horizon. A sextant uses mirrors so a sailor can see the horizon and the Sun or a star in the same view. The instrument measures their angle apart. Combined with accurate time and navigation tables, that angle helps calculate latitude or longitude.
