Why were some old library books chained to desks?

Because handmade books were extremely valuable and difficult to replace. Before modern printing made books cheaper, a large volume could represent months of copying and costly materials. Some libraries attached chains to book covers and reading furniture. Readers could consult the text, but removing it from the room was much harder.
