History & Time
Why did medieval artists use real gold in books?
Because thin gold leaf created a brilliant, lasting shine that ordinary yellow paint could not match. Illuminators applied tiny sheets of beaten gold to sticky or raised prepared areas on a page. Once polished, the metal reflected light dramatically. Gold also carried ideas of importance, wealth and sacred splendour in many manuscripts.
