How did scribes make dark ink from strange bumps on trees?

By mixing tannin-rich oak galls with iron compounds to create iron gall ink. Oak galls form when insects trigger unusual growth on a tree. Crushed galls release tannins. Scribes mixed these with an iron salt and a binder. The liquid darkened through chemical reactions and could bite deeply into parchment or paper.
