Why do hot-climate homes often place a courtyard in the middle?

Because an enclosed open space can provide shade, airflow and a cooler shared area. A courtyard lets rooms face an interior outdoor space instead of only a hot street. Walls create shade during parts of the day, and openings can guide air through the house. Plants or water may also cool the immediate surroundings.
