Why do people build roads across shallow water?

Because a raised causeway can create a direct crossing where ordinary ground is broken by water or wetlands. Builders place stone, earth or engineered structures to raise a route above a shallow channel, tidal flat or marsh. The crossing shortens travel, but designers may need openings or bridges so water can continue moving beneath or around it.
