Why do fishing harbours build walls out into the sea?

Because breakwaters absorb and redirect wave energy before it reaches sheltered boats. Open-coast waves can make a harbour dangerous. A breakwater places heavy rock or concrete in the waves' path. The structure forces water to break and lose energy, creating a calmer zone behind it where boats can moor more safely.
