How do rice terraces slow water on steep hills?
By turning one long slope into many small, nearly level fields with controlled water flow. A steep hillside sends water rushing downward. Terraces create flat steps bordered by low walls. Farmers can hold shallow water in one field and release it gradually to the next, reducing erosion while making wet rice cultivation possible on slopes.
