Why do many old towns have a large open square?

Because one central space could support markets, meetings, ceremonies and everyday public life. Dense towns needed shared places where many people could gather. A square near important streets or buildings provided flexible open ground. Its use could change from market stalls in the morning to announcements, celebrations or social meetings later.
