Why do some snowy cities connect buildings with indoor walkways?

Because enclosed routes let people move between busy buildings without repeatedly entering severe weather. In very cold places, crossing streets can mean ice, wind and deep snow. Enclosed bridges or underground passages link offices, stations and shops. The network reduces outdoor exposure and can make central areas easier to use through long winters.
