Why do fjords have such steep walls?

Because glaciers carved deep valleys through rock before the sea flooded them. A glacier moving toward the coast can grind a broad, deep U-shaped valley. After the ice melts, rising seawater enters the low valley. The original glacial cliffs remain on both sides, creating a narrow sea inlet with dramatic steep walls.
