Why do some giant rocks balance on tiny-looking bases?

Because weathering and erosion can remove weaker rock while a more resistant block remains. A balancing rock may begin as part of a larger cracked rock mass. Water, wind and temperature changes slowly weaken exposed areas. If softer material disappears faster around the base, a large upper block can be left standing on a surprisingly narrow support.
