Why do badlands have so many sharp ridges and gullies?

Because soft rock and sparse vegetation let brief storms erode the land quickly. Badlands often contain clay-rich or weak sedimentary rocks. With few plant roots to hold soil, rainwater can rush over bare slopes and cut narrow channels. Repeated erosion leaves steep ridges, gullies and colourful exposed layers.
