How do smooth stone pearls form inside caves?
When mineral-rich droplets coat a small grain that is gently moved again and again. A cave pearl begins around a tiny piece of sand or rock in a shallow pool. Dripping water leaves thin layers of calcium carbonate. Gentle movement prevents the growing lump from attaching to the floor, so repeated coatings build a rounded form.
