How can a volcano erupt cold mud instead of lava?

Because underground gas and pressurised water can push wet sediment toward the surface. Mud volcanoes are not usually powered by molten rock. Deep gases rise through water-rich clay and sediment. Pressure forces the mixture upward through fractures, where it bubbles or erupts as mud. Some cones slowly grow from repeated flows.
