How can the ground suddenly open into a sinkhole?

Water can dissolve hidden rock until the surface loses its support and collapses. Rainwater becomes slightly acidic as it moves through soil. In regions with limestone or similar soluble rock, water slowly enlarges cracks and cavities. If a roof becomes too weak, soil and ground above can collapse into the empty space.
