How do railway tracks steer a train onto a different line?

Because moving tapered rails guide a train's wheel flanges onto one path instead of another. At a set of railway points, movable switch rails sit right beside the fixed ones. A mechanism shifts them left or right, so when a train reaches the junction, its wheels are guided smoothly onto the chosen route.
