Why did feathers evolve before flight?

Because feathers were useful long before any dinosaur used them to fly. Early feathers may have helped dinosaurs stay warm, protect their skin or attract mates. Only later did some feathered dinosaur lineages develop structures suited to gliding and powered flight.
