Why did dinosaurs become extinct?

A giant asteroid triggered a rapid global environmental crisis. About 66 million years ago, an asteroid struck near present-day Mexico. Dust and gases filled the atmosphere, sunlight dropped, temperatures changed and food chains collapsed. All dinosaur lineages except birds eventually disappeared.
