How can helicopters stay still in the air?

Their spinning blades push enough air downwards to balance the helicopter's weight. A helicopter hovers perfectly still when its blades create just enough lift to balance its own weight. By tilting those blades slightly, a pilot can also climb, dip, or glide sideways.
