How do spacecraft use gravity to change speed?
Because a planet's gravity can gently bend a spacecraft's whole path through space. By flying past a planet at just the right angle, a spacecraft can borrow a little extra speed, or slow itself down. This trick, called a gravity assist, saves precious fuel on long missions.
