Why do traffic lights use red, yellow and green?

Because these three easy-to-spot colours became a signal everyone agreed to share. Red already meant danger and stop, so it stuck. Green became go, and yellow gives a friendly warning that a change is coming. Using the same colours everywhere helps drivers and walkers understand instantly.
