Why might there be planets like Earth somewhere else?

Because the universe contains an enormous number of stars, and planets form around many of them. Scientists have found thousands of planets beyond our solar system, including rocky worlds about Earth's size. Some orbit where liquid water might be possible, although we have not yet found another planet known to hold life.
