How do scientists look back in time with telescopes?

They collect light that has spent years—or billions of years—travelling towards Earth. Light does not arrive instantly. Looking at a distant star or galaxy shows the light that left it long ago, so greater distance lets telescopes reveal an earlier chapter of the universe.
