Why is Venus hotter than Mercury?

Because Venus is wrapped in a thick heat-trapping atmosphere. Mercury is closer to the Sun, but it has almost no air to hold heat. Venus has thick clouds and carbon dioxide that trap heat, like a planet-sized blanket.
