What makes an animal a true dinosaur?
Dinosaurs share a distinctive body plan inherited from common ancestors. Scientists identify dinosaurs using features in the hips, legs, ankles and other parts of the skeleton. Their upright limbs were positioned beneath the body rather than spreading sideways like those of many other reptiles.
