Why are crocodiles not dinosaurs?

They are relatives of dinosaurs, but they followed a different evolutionary path. Crocodilians and dinosaurs both belong to a larger group called archosaurs. Their ancestors split into separate branches more than 240 million years ago, long before familiar dinosaurs such as T. rex appeared.
