Why are marine reptiles not dinosaurs?

Animals such as mosasaurs and plesiosaurs belonged to different reptile groups. They lived during the age of dinosaurs, but their evolutionary histories were separate. Marine reptiles became specialised for ocean life, while true dinosaurs evolved mainly from land-dwelling ancestors.
