History & Time

How do scientists know when they have found a new dinosaur species?

They look for combinations of features not known from any existing species. Researchers carefully compare bones with fossils from related dinosaurs. Differences in skulls, teeth, vertebrae or limbs may show that a specimen represents something new, but scientists need enough evidence to rule out age, injury or normal variation.
